What is a commercial solar carport?
A commercial solar carport is a free-standing steel structure installed over a car park or hardstanding area, with solar panels mounted on the roof. Unlike rooftop solar, a carport creates its own structure — no existing building required. The result is covered parking that generates clean electricity simultaneously.
Solar carports are used interchangeably with "solar canopies" — both terms describe the same type of structure. The word "carport" tends to be used for structures primarily serving car parking; "canopy" is sometimes used for broader covered structures including walkways, entrances, and pergolas.
For commercial purposes — retail parks, industrial estates, business parks, hospitals, schools — the two terms mean the same thing: a solar-generating covered car park structure.
Why solar carports instead of rooftop solar?
Three situations make solar carports the better choice over rooftop installations:
- Roof unsuitable: Asbestos cement, poor structural condition, multi-tenanted building with no usable roof access
- Larger system wanted: The car park often has more viable surface area than the roof, enabling larger systems
- EV charging needed: Solar carports integrate EV chargers far more cost-effectively than rooftop arrays — same cable run, same structure, no extra groundwork

Three solar carport structure types
We design all three types in-house. The right choice depends on your car park orientation, access requirements, and budget.
Mono-Pitch Carport
Single south-facing slope. Best yield, lowest cost per kWp. Ideal for car parks with clear south orientation.
Full spec guide →T-Frame Carport
Central column, dual-pitch structure covers two rows of vehicles. Ideal for east-west car parks.
Full spec guide →Cantilever Carport
Single-post design gives unobstructed vehicle access. Best for hospitals, disabled parking, HGV zones.

| Factor | Mono-Pitch | T-Frame | Cantilever |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best car park orientation | Clear south-facing | East–west double rows | Any — single-sided |
| Rows covered | One row | Two rows | One row |
| Vehicle access | Standard | Standard | Unobstructed (no rear posts) |
| Yield per kWp | Highest | High | High |
| Relative cost | Lowest per kWp | Mid | Highest |
| Best for | Retail & supermarket bays | Large open car parks | Hospitals, disabled & HGV bays |

Solar carport technical specifications
Every structure is engineered to UK building standards. Typical specification for a commercial solar carport in our galvanised-steel range — solar PV carports are confirmed per site at structural design stage.
| Specification | Typical commercial value |
|---|---|
| Generation per parking bay | 3.0–3.6 kWp per single bay |
| Annual yield (UK) | 850–980 kWh per kWp/yr |
| Panel wattage | 450–500 W bifacial mono PERC (+8–15% from rear-side gain) |
| Panels per double bay | 8–10 modules |
| Clearance height | 2.4–3.0 m (HGV/van variants to 4.5 m) |
| Bay / column spacing | 2.5–2.7 m per bay; 5.0–5.4 m double-bay span |
| Roof pitch | 5° mono-pitch (single slope) / dual-pitch options |
| Steel & finish | S355 structural steel, hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 |
| Structural standards | BS EN 1990 / 1991 / 1993 (Eurocodes) — UK wind & snow load zoned |
| Foundations | Driven/ground-screw piles or concrete pad, site-dependent |
| Structure design life | 40+ years (galvanised steel) |
| Panel warranty | 25-year linear performance (≥80% at year 25) |
Indicative ranges. Exact wind/snow loading, foundation design and bay geometry are confirmed in the certified structural scheme for your site.

Worked example: an 80-bay commercial car park
A typical mid-size site — around 80 parking bays, ~1,000 m² of canopy. Modelled at UK Midlands irradiance, 22p/kWh blended commercial rate, 85% self-consumption.

Structural design
Certified structural engineer produces foundation and steelwork design for your specific site. Geotechnical investigation where required.
Install
Typical on-site programme 2-4 weeks. We phase the works to keep 80%+ of car park spaces open throughout.
Commission
MCS commissioning certificate. G98/G99 DNO notification. SEG registration. Monitoring platform handover.
Who installs solar carports
Solar carports work for any organisation with a car park of 20+ spaces. The economics improve significantly above 80 spaces where EV charging and self-consumption combine well.
Project case study
Education campus car park — Midlands
A further-education campus needed to cut a six-figure annual energy bill and add covered EV charging for staff and fleet without building on its roofs. We installed a 303 kWp mono-pitch solar carport across 120+ parking bays, integrated with 22 kW workplace EV chargers and a monitoring platform.
