Solar canopies for Edinburgh car parks: planning, yield and grid

Edinburgh’s business parks, retail sites and industrial estates have the large surface car parks that suit solar canopies — but the rules that decide whether a canopy works here are Scottish ones. Planning runs under Scotland’s permitted development order, grid connections go through SP Energy Networks, and several funding routes that older guides describe for Scottish businesses are closed to solar PV.

Funding a Canopy in Edinburgh

Businesses: the Business Energy Scotland SME Loan Scheme is not accepting new applications for solar PV projects, so a private canopy is usually funded from capital, finance or a power purchase agreement. The UK-wide Annual Investment Allowance covers qualifying plant up to £1 million a year.

Public bodies: the City of Edinburgh Council, universities and other public bodies with Scottish climate change duties can apply for zero-interest loans under the Public Sector Energy Efficiency Loan Scheme run by Salix, where projects pay back within 12 years.

EV charging: chargers under the canopy can qualify for the Workplace Charging Scheme at up to £500 per socket until 31 March 2027.
