In Hull, a solar canopy over a non-domestic car park can be permitted development under Class OA of Part 14 of the General Permitted Development Order, in force since 21 December 2023 — but you must first apply to Kingston upon Hull City Council for a determination on whether prior approval is needed for the canopy's siting, design, external appearance and glare. No part may be more than 4 metres above ground level, and the canopy cannot be inside or within 10 metres of the curtilage of a house or block of flats, within the curtilage of a listed building, or on a scheduled monument. Conservation areas are not excluded, but the council also considers the canopy's appearance there. If the council has not decided within 56 days, the work may go ahead. Confirm the route with the council before ordering the structure.
